The Sheriff is directed by KRS 134.119 to be the collector of state, county, and district property taxes. The Sheriff's property tax responsibilities include the collection of all types of property tax bills including any additional, supplemental, omitted, or franchise property tax bills issued. All monthly collections must be accounted for in a report submitted to each taxing district.
The Sheriff's Office mails property tax bills for real estate and tangible property within the first week of October each year. These bills cover the current years taxes for the property. County bills will be sent directly to each taxpayer. It will be the taxpayer's responsibility to forward to any mortgage company or paying agent.

Normally, bills are mailed on October 30th and bills become payable November 1st.
November 1st - November 30th = 2% discount period

Yes, postmark is accepted for the 2024 taxes, and there is a drop box available for after-hours payments on the east side of the Caldwell County Courthouse.
Kentucky state law requires the sheriff's office to end collection on April 15th. At the close of business on April 15th, all unpaid taxes are transferred to the Caldwell County clerk's office. The taxpayer will need to contact the Caldwell County clerk's office at 270-365-6754 for inquiries regarding current amounts due.
The Sheriff's website and the county clerk's websites do not link together. The Sheriff's website lists the payment status as of April 15th of the tax collection year. For delinquent amounts paid please contact the Caldwell County clerk.

Exemptions
Section 170 of the Kentucky Constitution
For 2024-2025, the maximum Homestead/Disability Exemption on real estate owned by qualified persons has been set at $46,350. The amount of the Homestead exemption is adjusted every two years in accordance with KRS 132.810 to compensate for changes in the purchasing power of the dollar.
To qualify for the Homestead Exemption, a person must;
- Provide documentation that they are sixty-five (65 years of age or older during the year they make application).
- Own and maintain the property as their primary residence.
- Not claim any other exemption in a different location, county, or state.
To qualify for the Disability Exemption, a person must:
- Own and maintain the property as their primary residence,
- Provide documentation that they have been totally disabled under a program authorized or administered by an agency of the United States government or by any other retirement system since January of the year in which application is made.
- Agree under penalty of perjury that, if their disability changes and benefits are no longer received, they shall report such changes to the PVA. Failure to do so will result in supplemental tax bills being issued for the amount of the exemption received for up to five years.

How to Apply
An application must be completed in the Property Valuation Office. The property owner will be asked to provide verification of age. Most people provide their birth certificate or driver's license. When applying for the disability exemption, documentation must verify that the applicant was receiving payments from January through December.
Applicants may receive only one exemption on one piece of property in one county and one state.
Kentucky Revised Statute 132.010 (9, 10, and 11 provides an Agricultural Exemption for taxation of land based on its production capability rather than its fair cash value. Agricultural land is defined as any parcel (or combination of adjacent parcels that is ten or more acres and is used for the production of livestock and/or the growing of crops including timber.
